WATER ELEMENT-WINTER

In TCM (Traditional chinese medicine) and Taoism, Winter is associated with the element of water. Water is representative of intelligence and wisdom, flexibility, softness, and pliancy; however, an overabundance of the element is said to cause difficulty in choosing something and sticking to it. I love incorporating these associations into my classes. Water is sometimes calm, sometimes turbulent-just like our thoughts when we explore them. Water clears, it washes away the old and gives life to new. The earth’s bodies of water move with the moon. We as humans are made up of mainly water, and thus feel this connection. The planet’s water cycle is ever moving creating life, habitats and cleansing as it goes. Within the 5 elements theory cycle Water promotes the existence of wood-stability, growth, which in turn promotes fire energy- abundance and joy. We are not just spectators of these seasonal changes-we are are part of them just as we are part of the world and ultimately the universe. I love pondering upon the parallels we can derive from the elements and nature and sharing these thoughts with you. I hope this has given you something to muse upon too.
